Access & Use Policy
The Iroko Historical Society is committed to providing responsible public access to its holdings while honoring the ethical, cultural, and spiritual obligations attached to many of the materials it stewards. The Society recognizes that not all forms of knowledge were created for unrestricted circulation and that archival access must be balanced with care, context, and accountability.
Public Descriptive Access
Public access to the Society’s holdings is currently provided through collection-level descriptions, finding aids, and contextual documentation published on this site. These descriptions are intended to support research discovery, transparency, and scholarly awareness of the scope and nature of the collections without disclosing restricted or sensitive content.
Restricted Materials
Many materials stewarded by the Iroko Historical Society contain sacred, initiatory, culturally sensitive, or community-held knowledge. Such materials are not publicly reproduced or made available for unrestricted consultation. Restrictions are applied to protect cultural integrity, prevent misrepresentation, and respect custodial responsibilities.
Access by Request
Researchers may submit inquiries regarding access to restricted materials by contacting the Society through the designated contact page. Requests should include a description of the research purpose and intended use. Access decisions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may involve ethical review, custodial permission, and, where appropriate, community consultation.
Submission of a request does not guarantee access.
Use and Reproduction
Reproduction, citation, or publication of materials stewarded by the Society requires prior approval. Use of materials is governed by ethical considerations in addition to applicable legal and copyright frameworks. The Society reserves the right to limit or deny reproduction where use may result in cultural harm, misrepresentation, or violation of custodial agreements.
Ongoing Stewardship
Access policies at the Iroko Historical Society are part of an ongoing stewardship process. As the Society’s archival infrastructure continues to develop, access pathways may be refined to reflect best practices, community guidance, and professional archival standards.
Questions regarding collections, access, or stewardship practices may be directed through the Society’s contact page.
